Bloc Party, 1st of March(!) Edinburgh Liquis Room

i know it was a long time ago, but events conspired against me.
It seems a lonbger time ago when you consider the size of the venue, with The Bravery soon to play the SECC ( I think, if i'm wrong it's An Honest Mistake) off the back of their debut album for example. But in The Liquid Room there was a palpable sense of "last chance to see" and in my case, touch, in such an intimate venue. First though we sample the delights of Chromeo (3/5) a 3-piece of drums guitar and talkbox peddling unironic oily funk fronted by a Marcus Brigstock-a-like on guitar and vocals and a chap who resembled the Reverend Run, of DMC fame, on the talkbox. they only seemed to have three songs, one of which was about themselves; and had a habit of saying "what's up Edinbro? We go by the name of Chromeo," a strategy which would bork better here than in Lowestoft for instance. To this day I'm unable to decide whether they were genius or dumb, and suspect they may walk the line between with The Hives and for their brief moment of glory, Junior Senior

The 'Party take to the stage beaming, on the first night of a very sold out tour, later expanded to fit a Glasgow date at the mighty Barrowlands. They seem overjoyed at the response from the usually subdued Edinburgh crowd and stop beween songs to grin at one another endearingly. They too are hawking their debut "Silent Alarm" and play most of it, interspersed with b-sides and stuff (clever way of vaguely admitting I didn't recognise a few songs) and are tight and on good form. The biggest receptionb is reserved for the singles, but storming album tracks like 'positire tension' and 'like eating glass' also get the crowd mental. They play for a little over an hour, which is fair enough considering their 45 minute album. reports back from the glasgow gig were a little disappointing and they swing back into edinburgh in October to play the Usher Hall on the same alnbum. It was great to see them fresh and enthusiastic before the year of touring takes its toll 5/5
